Galaxy Put Seven Past Vasco In NBK Cup Goal-Fest

TS Galaxy cruised to the round of 16 in the Nedbank Cup after thrashing Vasco Da Gama 7-0 at the Mbombela Stadium on Wednesday night.

Nedbank Cup

Result: TS Galaxy 7-0 Vasco da Gama

Date: 29 January 2025

Venue: Mbombela Stadium

Keagan Dolly earned his first start for the Rockets of the season, while Vasco counted on goalkeeper Gershin Kock and Mogamat May, who both have previous experience in the competition.

Galaxy only needed two minutes to get the breakthrough as a well-worked passing ended with the ball going to an un-marked Dzenan Zajmovic, who sent a first-time strike into the far corner.

The lead was doubled in the fifth minute when Puso Dithejane picked up his second assist by intercepting a pass and playing in Zajmovic, who found the back of the net with a lovely flick.

After a slow start, Vasco should have pulled a goal in the 22nd minute when Tristan van der Lingen shrugged off one challenge the box, but the attack sent his effort wide with only galaxy goalkeeper Jiri Ciupa to beat.

Vasco were made to rue that miss, as Dolly got his name on the score-sheet a few minutes later with a clinical finish into the far corner from outside of the box, opening his account for the club in the process.

Galaxy showed no signs of slowing down in the final ten minutes of the first half, as Marks Munyai got in on the act by catching out Kock at his near post with a powerful free-kick.

Th visitors were a little more solid in the second period and they could have reduced the deficit after the hour mark but Luciano Johnson failed to hit the target in the box after Galaxy struggled with a long throw into the box.

However, Galaxy were able to bag a fifth goal with eight minutes left on the clock as substitute Thokozani Sibanyoni rounded off the scoring with simple finish from Thamsanqa Masiya's well-weighted cross.

Sibanyoni completed his brace on 86 minutes after latching onto a ball over the top before firing in at Kock's near post, before fellow substitute Damir Sovsic added his name to the score-sheet by making it 7-0 after some good work by Dithejane.

Galaxy will face Motsepe Foundation Championship side Durban City FC in the next round.
