Nedbank Cup Report: EC Bees v Orlando Pirates 12 March 2017

Nedbank Cup

Result: EC Bees 1-3 Orlando Pirates

Date: 11 March 2017

Venue: Sisa Dukashe Stadium

Orlando Pirates ended their 12-game winless run in all competitions as they defeated EC Bees 3-1 in their Nedbank Cup Last 32 tie.

Bees enjoyed a fine start to the encounter, as they showed their attacking intent from the onset with their pace down the flanks.

However, Pirates broke the deadlock after 14 minutes as Dove Wome slotted into an empty net, after Mpho Makola's effort had deflected into the path of the midfielder.

The visitors should have doubled their lead two minutes later but Bernard Morrison could only hit the crossbar from six-yards out.

Bees were on the back foot for most of the second half, as Pirates took control of the encounter for the encounter for the rest of the half.

However, Welcome Qalanto nearly leveled matters on the stroke of half, but the striker's towering header was saved by Siyabonga Mpontshane.

Kjell Jonevret would not have been all too pleased going into the break only one goal up, as Thamsanqa Gabuza squandered a few chances in the first half.

The lead was eventually doubled in the 52nd minute when Makola's free-kick evaded everyone and sailed into the far corner.

The home side pulled a goal back two minutes later as Bongani Chikile slotted past the on-rushing Mpontshane after an error from Issa Sarr.

However, Pirates restored their two-goal lead in the 67th minute as Gabuza turned home Wome's low cross from the right.

The visitors nearly added a fourth goal in the 76th minute but Issa Sarr's header crashes against the woodwork.

Jonevret threw on Yusuf Maart for his Pirates debut in the final stages of the second half, as the visitors saw out the closing stages with relative ease.
