Ahead of today's clash with EC Bees FC in the Nedbank Cup, former Orlando Pirates defender, Mark Fish, has warned the Buccaneers about the possibilities of lesser opposition causing an upset by using the example of one of Pirates' most embarrassing defeats.
Tsotetsi: EC Bees Ready To Face Pirates
Orlando Pirates take on BC Bees in the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in the Nedbank Cup this afternoon in what appears to be a straightforward tie for the Soweto giants. However, Fish has reminded fans that the smaller teams in South Africa will be up for a fight in the cup and that it has financial rewards that will provide additional motivation.
"The nice thing about the Nedbank Cup is that it gives teams from all the other divisions an opportunity to play against the best clubs in South Africa," the former Lazio defender explained. "And they can also potentially earn the money needed to run their teams for years to come."
SLTV: Baxter – Jonevret Will Bring Structure To Pirates
Fish then continued by providing evidence of one of the biggest footballing upsets in South Africa, when the Mighty Buccaneers fell to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Maluti FET College in 2013.
"They (Pirates) got knocked out by Maluti (FET College) a couple of years ago, so there's an opportunity for smaller teams to take on teams like Orlando Pirates – one of the most supported teams," he added. "And when teams have the chance to rise to the occasion, they tend to pull off an upset. So, Pirates need to make sure they don't become complacent."
Today's match will get underway at 15:00.
