Orlando Pirates (2020)

After a disappointing exit in the quarter-finals the previous year, the Buccaneers, led by German-born coach Josef Zinnbauer, were determined to redeem themselves. Their journey to the final was marked by determination and skill, culminating in a dramatic come-from-behind 2-1 victory against Bloemfontein Celtic. Key goals from Deon Hotto and Thembinkosi Lorch, the latter from the penalty spot, secured their triumph.

Mamelodi Sundowns (2021)

Often criticised for not prioritizing the MTN8, Masandawana were on a mission to reclaim their dominance. Their determination paid off as they ended a 14-year drought in the tournament. The final against Cape Town City was fiercely contested, with Sundowns ultimately prevailing in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, thanks to standout performances, including from goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

The appointment of Spaniard Jose Riveiro as head coach was initially met with skepticism, but he quickly proved his critics wrong. Pirates displayed formidable form throughout the tournament, overcoming Royal AM and Sundowns in the earlier rounds before defeating AmaZulu in the final. Riveiro's tactical acumen was evident as he navigated the team to the MTN8 crown.

Orlando Pirates (2023)

Defending their title, Pirates, still under Riveiro, embarked on a campaign to replicate their previous success. Their journey featured a dominant 5-0 victory over Sekhukhune United and a tense semi-final against Stellenbosch FC, won on away goals. The final against Sundowns in Durban was a dramatic affair, with Pirates emerging victorious after a penalty shootout, showcasing the heroics of goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.

Each tournament has brought its own set of challenges and memorable moments, contributing to the rich history of the MTN8.

As anticipation builds for the upcoming season, teams are gearing up to create new histories and possibly, new legends in the making. The MTN8 continues to be a testament to the competitive spirit and passion that fuels South African football.
