Sundowns Find Comfort In Chase Of Chiefs Record?

Sundowns Find Comfort In Chase Of Chiefs Record?

Mamelodi Sundowns could be facing a weakened Stellenbosch after head coach Steve Barker confirmed two more key players will not be available.

The Brazilians will host Stellies in a league clash on Wednesday evening, both sides coming from MTN8 semi-final second leg duels over the weekend.

The Cape Winelands side came up against Orlando Pirates having just lost the services of Sibongiseni Mthethwa who was transferred to Kaizer Chiefs while defender Ismael Toure was suspended.

Ahead of the game against Sundowns, Barker has confirmed that Jayden Adams will be out due to suspension after he picked up his fourth booking against the Buccaneers and also indicated that Iqraam Rayners will also not be available, possibly through injury after he was substituted just after the hour-mark against the Soweto giants due to injury.

"Now, we need to focus on the league campaign, obviously a very tough away game against Sundowns, again players like Jayden Adams, now I think he's suspended for that game and Iqraam Rayners (injured)," Barker said in the MTN8 post-match press conference on Sunday.

"So a little bit tough for us right now in terms of personnel and depth," he said.

The Brazilians' captain Themba Zwane, however, does not believe the absence of a player like Mthethwa will weaken Stellenbosch.

"I don't think (they will be a weaker team) because if you check Barker the way he does things, he always has someone similar to the player that has left," Zwane said via the club's media department.

"He's got a lot of players who are quick on the ball, players who are aggressive on the ball, I mean they are fast, they are difficult to play against, I don't think there will be much that will change," he added.

Sundowns are looking to equal Kaizer Chiefs' record of eight consecutive victories from the start of the season they set in the 2014/15 season under former coach Stuart Baxter.

The Brazilians have won seven straight league games since the start after edging Pirates 1-0 last week.
