Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena says his relationship with Pitso Mosimane is similar to that of Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola, despite people hoping that it would be a 'spicy' relationship.

Mokwena has spoken highly of the Al Ahli Jeddah coach, referring to him as a mentor, father figure and close family friend.

Mosimane and Mokwena worked together during their time at Sundowns and achieved numerous trophies as 'Jingles' honed the skills of his younger counterpart.

As reported by the Siya crew, there was talk of the duo reconnecting in Egypt when Mosimane took up the task of leading Al Ahly, although Mokwena is said to have opted to remain at Sundowns where he has since become the head coach.

"I can only speak in glowing terms," Mokwena said in response to Mosimane's praise.

"I know South Africa would love for it to be a spicy relationship, but people don't know. I consider coach Pitso not just a mentor, but a father figure for sure, and because he played with my father, he did. They shared the pitch. He is a very close family friend; he is a Sundowns man. He's done so much for this football club and regarded as, for sure, and rightfully so, as an icon and will go into the books of this club as that.

"I was listening to Arteta speak about Pep, I could speak and go on and run out of superlatives because he's taught me a lot and for that I will always be extremely grateful for the support and the education. That he's embedded into my career and I'm only humbled that he can say what he says, but he knows also the influence that he's imparted into my career and for that I will always be grateful," Mokwena said of his mentor.
