Downs Chief: Results Not Main Reason Behind Reshuffle

The man responsible for the playing philosophy and well-being of the team Flemming Berg has provided more clarity on the coaching reshuffle that took place at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Since starting his tenure as club Sporting Director in April this year, Berg has been working behind the scenes, without much fanfare as all focus was on the galaxy of talent at the squad's disposal.

Stepping out of the shadows, the former Head of Elite Football Development at the Danish Football Association, has provided clarity on why the coaching reshuffle that saw Rulani Mokwena appointed as head coach, Steve Komphela as first team coach and Manqoba Mngqithi as senior coach, took place.

According to Berg, the reason behind the changes was down to the lack of development of the playing style of the team and to provide clarity to the club and not necessarily the results.

"The reason behind it is, as it also says in our press release is because we have had a longer period of time where we have not been happy with our performances and probably more important, the development in our performances," Berg said speaking to the media on Tuesday.

"We have gotten to a certain extent, the results we wanted especially in the league now, it's the fifth win in a row but the performances have not developed as expected and as we have hoped and because of that we have decided to do the changes that we have done.

"We have the same persons in our coaching team, and they are behind everything that have gone so far, it's a teamwork, it's not only the coaches and the players, its everyone behind [it] and we felt that we needed to get some clarity into our squad and our team and staff in general," he added.

"The roles in general as we have described it, we have a head coach in coach Rulani, we have a first team coach in coach Steve and we have a senior coach in coach Manqoba. Its three very highly qualified coaches and we are very happy with the way they have taken the changes, with a lot of professionalism and a lot of integrity. But we also expected it because it's very highly qualified coaches.

"We are very lucky at Mamelodi Sundowns to have that amongst us.

"We have done that because we felt we needed a new direction and a new clarity on the responsibilities and it's our responsibility as leaders to take brave decisions, leadership is about a lot of bravery and decisions at the right time and the time is now. We have done the changes because we believe that it will take the team forward and bring us, not to the results, but the way we want to play football and to bring us to be one of the best clubs in Africa and to be a contender in all tournaments that we participate in."
