Sundowns' Responsibility to Bafana's Progress

Sundowns' Responsibility to Bafana's Progress

The upsurge in form and Bafana Bafana call-up of SuperSport United midfielder Grant Margeman shows Mamelodi Sundowns have to be accountable for players not getting game time at their club.

There has been criticism from supporters that Sundowns reduces the pool of Bafana players if they sign a big number of players and end up not using them, most of whom have the quality to play for the national team.

Margeman has found a new lease of life at SuperSport since joining on loan from the Brazilians at the beginning of last season and his move was made permanent at the start of the current campaign.

The Cape Town Spurs (previously Ajax Cape Town) academy graduate earned a place at Bafana in a competitive midfield department after continuing his form for Matsatsantsa in the new season, where United are lying third on the log after five games.

The 25-year-old says he is honoured to be called-up to the national team and is looking forward to taking his game to another level.

"It's an honour for me to be here. I've been part of junior (national team) squads, I've been working hard with my club SuperSport, so for it was just to be patient and to make sure that I perform well, now is to make sure I repay the coach and do well for the team," Margeman said in a press conference.

"It's another step for me. For me it is about how I can take my game to the next level. For me it's all about making sure I do well in the next two games with the opportunities probably the coach will give us, make sure I consistently stay part of the (core) group."

SuperSport CEO Stan Matthews previously revealed that he had overseas offers for Margeman in the off-season but wants to keep the diminutive midfielder for at least a couple of seasons.

Margeman was asked to comment on that statement and said that his focus is on doing well at United and he has left the rest of the off-field-issues like transfers to the management of the team.

"At SuperSport it is just to make sure I do well, whatever happens off the field, that I leave for management, for me it is to make sure I do well at club level, compete and hopefully make sure we finish like we did last season in the top three," he said.

Sundowns have assembled big squads over the years and as it's expected not all of them will get game time, they have a responsibility to the country not to keep them at the club, because Bafana Bafana will benefit with more players given the opportunity to spread their wings elsewhere.
