Onyango Makes Announcement On His Future

Onyango Makes Announcement On His Future

Denis Onyango and Ronwen Williams hold the Betway Premiership trophy.

Denis Onyango sits comfortably at the top with a record of 12 league medals and he's now answered the question on whether or not he will be around to challenge for number 13.

Onyango walked into the press conference room at Loftus Stadium on Sunday evening after their 2-0 victory over Magesi FC, carrying the R20 million cheque, and looked like a man who was not ready to call it quits just yet.

He clearly still has the energy to keep going and he is proving that life really does begin at 40, a milestone he celebrated just last week.

Onyango has made 13 appearances in all competitions in this campaign, which is four more than he managed last season. He's proven to be a reliable understudy to number one shot-stopper Ronwen Williams and wants to keep making a valuable contribution both on and off the pitch beyond this season.

"What do you think? Go for the 13th one. Yeah, I am still playing. The club still has to speak to me, but I still believe I have the energy to support the boys. To be honest, I am still here. One more (season). The body will speak to me, but I am still here. I speak with confidence that I am still at Mamelodi Sundowns for another season," Onyango confirmed to media at the post match press conference at Loftus Stadium on Sunday.

"For me, it's about showing the youngsters it's possible, regardless of your age. Probably I am on two percent left. I have exhausted the 98 percent. It's for the young ones to know that you need to work hard to get to where you want to be. Talent alone is not enough. I am not the most talented goalkeeper, but when we work at training, Ronwen and I will give the same. It does not matter how old I am, I must give the same. If I can't give the same, then I must retire."

What Onyango has achieved in South African football is incredible, coming from Uganda unknown to the local game to become a record holder. Nine of his 12 league titles have been at Sundowns, but this one was not as comfortable as the previous two, considering how things were for the club early on in the season.

"To be honest, I never thought it would get to 12, but the moment you work hard and go to the right teams, I think it opens up. Twelve is a lot, but there are people who are on eight and they can catch up anytime," the former Ugandan international said.

"For me, it's an incredible thing to be part of the group that has won the eighth in a row. It has not been easy. We didn't start off well with a few challenges, change of coaches. But the guys stayed focused because we knew that the target was to win the league and stay in the Champions League and win more trophies. For me, it's been about pushing the young ones and showing them the bigger picture."

The next target is the CAF Champions League trophy, which Sundowns will be competing for in the two-legged final against Pyramids, with the first leg scheduled for this Saturday at Loftus Stadium.

Onyango is one of two surviving members from the team which won the Champions League in 2016 and will have a big role to guide the rest of his teammates in arguably the biggest matches in their season.
