The match between Esperance and Sundowns witnessed unfortunate incidents between fans of both teams after a brawl broke out in the stands. A Tunisian fan was close to death after hanging from a high spot in the stands before a South African supporter intervened to save him.

Press reports have noted that the management of the Tunisian club Esperance has prepared a comprehensive file on the match's events with the aim of filing a complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Meanwhile, Sundowns issued an official statement expressing their sadness over the events and apologising to Esperance and the Tunisian fans.

The club explained in its statement: "Sundowns awaits a full report from the match commissioner and is committed to cooperating with the Confederation of African Football to complete its investigations before the second leg."

Sundowns further stated: "We are confident that the investigation will uncover the circumstances surrounding this unruly behaviour. However, we are required to apologise to Espérance Sportive de Tunis and its fans, as this unruly behaviour occurred at our stadium, despite the existence of video clips and factual evidence."
