This has become a familiar story for the Brazilians, with Sundowns having now been knocked out at the semi-final stage of the Top 8 competition – whether BP, SAA, or MTN8, more than any other team in the PSL era, a staggering 10 times.
Despite their dominance in the league and on the continent, Sundowns have only managed to lift the MTN8 trophy once since 2008/09, when they beat Cape Town City in the 2021/22 final. They have reached the final three other times , 2008/09, 2016/17, and 2023/24 – but it remains a trophy that has consistently eluded their grasp.
Could the reason lie beyond the surface?
Sundowns are not your average PSL side. Over the last decade, their continental calendar has become relentless, with deep runs in the CAF Champions League almost a given and, more recently, participation in the FIFA Club World Cup.
These extended commitments mean shorter pre-season periods, less recovery time, and perhaps an early-season disadvantage compared to their rivals.
Are the Brazilians slow starters because they are chasing bigger prizes elsewhere? Or does the MTN8 simply expose the one chink in their armour, a competition where one slip can end the journey?
