The Big Challenge For Vilakazi & Co

The Big Challenge For Vilakazi & Co

A former Kaizer Chiefs defender has explained how the pressure Amakhosi are enduring is making it difficult for the young players to make a name for themselves in the first team.

Amakhosi have quite a few youngsters who have come through the ranks, but are finding it difficult to make a mark with the club struggling to get back into the top eight following a string of poor results.

The Soweto giants have registered a mere one victory in 2024 and while Mduduzi Shabalala, Wandile Duba, Samkelo Zwane and Mfundo Vilakazi have been given opportunities by interim coach Cavin Johnson, they have not quite cracked it consistently and the club's indifferent form is making it almost impossible for them to shine.

Mokete Tsotetsi has explained why he feels it's difficult for the club's youngsters to shine, but has also given interim mentor Johnson advice on what to do for the rest of the season so that they can benefit for the long term.

"With results not coming, it becomes difficult for the coach to play the young players on a regular basis because that would also put them under pressure. They are good players and they can manage it, but he does not want to choke them with all the pressure. It's challenging for the coach. The team is not stable because it changes a lot. It's difficult to see their true potential because the club is going through a difficult time," Tsotetsi said to the Siya crew.

In preparation for next season, Tsotetsi feels it would not be a bad idea to play the young men a bit more, to build their confidence and ensure they are ready for what should be another demanding campaign in terms of expectations from the Amakhosi supporters, who want a trophy in the cabinet to end the almost 10 years of heartache.
