Kaizer Chiefs edged closer to ending their trophy drought after advancing to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals with victory over Cape Town City.

Amakhosi made three changes from the stalemate with SuperSport United before the FIFA break, giving a start to Andriamirado 'Dax' Andrianarimanana while Teenage Hadebe and Hendrick Ekstein returned to the side.

George Maluleka almost opened the scoring for Chiefs in the fifth minute with a strike from outside the box that was parried over the bar by City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh as Ernst Middendorp's charges took control from the onset.

Chiefs were rewarded for their good start in the 29th minute when Ekstein sent a deflected effort past Leeuwenburgh after Bernard Parker capitalised on a mistake at the back.

Chiefs were unlucky not to be 2-0 up seven minutes before the break after Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya hit the post with the net gaping following a defence splitting cross from Khama Billiat, while Ekstein also failed to convert from 12-yards out.

Five minutes into the second half , Kewuti came close to equalising for Benni McCarthy's men with a header at the back post that crashed against the upright from point-blank range. However, second half substitute Dumisani Zum, who replaced Ramahlwe Mphahlele, gave Chiefs a two-goal cushion 11 minutes into the second stanza after getting on the end of a knockdown inside the six-yard box from a corner to bundle the ball over the line with his knee. Middendorp was forced to make a change in the 65th minute after Billiat had picked up a knock and was replaced by Ryan Moon. Parker had a glorious chance to make it 3-0 for Amakhosi with 13 minutes remaining after he went clear on goal on the left side of the box and despite having the space and time, he struck his effort over the bar. In the end, Chiefs held on for the win to join TS Galaxy, Chippa United and Golden Arrows in the last four.
