Itumeleng Khune, suspended from Naturena, yet king of the Carling Black Label Cup jungle. Man of the Match, R100 000 richer, and whispers swirling: was this a message to the Amakhosi faithful? William "Cool Cat" Shongwe, Kaizer Chiefs legend and glove master himself, purrs a different tune.

He paints a picture of a lion in mid-roar, reminding the nation of Khune's reign."Khune was just being Khune. That's Khune for you. That's the Khune we all know. I don't think he was proving a point to anyone. He doesn't have a point to prove. We all know what he is capable of doing despite the situation he is finding himself in with the club right now. So, in that game against Stellenbosch he was just reminding the whole country who he is and what he can do. But no point to prove at all," Shongwe told Soccer Laduma.
Cool Cat's words carry the weight of experience. He's seen Khune weather storms before, his talent a beacon that no suspension can dim.
And for the Amakhosi fans who voted him into the All Star eleven, Khune's performance was sweet satisfaction.
"Whether that action on the day has twisted the hand of others that maybe that's another story for another day. But what he did was to show the supporters who voted for him that he was grateful and that he deserved to be there in the team hence that great performance for the team."
The future, like the Afcon break, stretches hazy. But for Cool Cat, the message is clear: Khune's roar isn't a challenge, it's a promise.
"Mind you that was a team that had just trained together for two days and for him to save the team from defeat like that just shows how good he is," Shongwe concluded.
