Kannemeyer: If You're A Captain At Chiefs…

Does a new era at Kaizer Chiefs require a new captain? After Inacio Miguel was handed the armband in the CUFA Cup, former Amakhosi left-back David Kannemeyer weighs in on what it takes to lead the Glamour Boys.

Chiefs have struggled to have a consistent captain since former goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was no longer a regular in the previous two seasons.

After shot-stopper Brandon Petersen was handed the armband at the beginning of last season, he could also not command a regular spot in goal after costly errors and Yusuf Maart was eventually made captain, with former midfielder Keagan Dolly also getting the armband when he was fit.

In the absence of Maart, Given Msimango appeared the preferred choice, before head coach Nasreddine Nabi joined Amakhosi ahead of the current campaign.

However, with the former Sekhukhune United midfielder on the bench against Marumo Gallants in the CUFA Cup, Miguel was handed the armband, with Msimango, his centre-back partner in the match overlooked.

There is currently a debate going on whether the Angolan has what it takes to lead Chiefs in the new era under Nabi.

"Obviously, the coach has seen something in a leader and that's why I think he gave him the captaincy. The question would be, can he drive the team forward? Can he carry Chiefs on his shoulders? Because if you're the captain at Chiefs you need to carry the team," Kannemeyer said on SoccerBeat YouTube Channel.

"But I think because he's from outside, a fresh start is always good. The coach must know there is something within him that he can lead the club.

"I think a defender or goalkeeper in my opinion is more better than a captain upfront or a captain in the middle of the park because when you're at the back, you can see the whole field and if you communicate and you're vocal, you can actually help the whole team," Kannemeyer added.

Even though Maart did not get the armband after coming off the bench against Gallants, he appears to still be the official captain after he was handed the CUFA Cup trophy in a celebration ceremony.
