Kaizer Chiefs Explain Why Kappa Edged Castore & Co In New Kit Deal

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that a number of international sportswear companies missed out after they settled for Kappa as their new kit sponsor.

Chiefs have reunited with the Italian sportswear manufacturer as their official technical sponsor and licensing partner from the 2023/24 season, on a five-year contract.

The Glamour Boys' current deal with Nike comes to an end when the season concludes and they will then roll back the years with the return of Kappa, who initially sponsored them from 1989.

The Soweto giants won a series of trophies, in one of their successful periods wearing the Kappa-branded kits and the Italian brand makes a return after the first sponsorship was discontinued in 1996.

Soccer Laduma broke the story that Chiefs and Nike were deadlocked in negotiations over a contract extension.

In edition 1295 of the publication, the Siya crew revealed that British sportswear premium brand, Castore had entered into talks with Chiefs with the view of replacing Nike.

Other international companies such as Puma were also bandied about in the media as potential replacements for the American sportswear giants.

Amakhosi Marketing and Commercial Director Jessica Motaung confirmed that there was strong interest from other sportswear companies who made bids to associate themselves with the club.

"We're very fortunate to have a very strong brand that attracts many sponsors and in the kit space we were fortunate to speak to a number of sponsors who were interested," Motaung said on Metro FM Sports.

"Obviously we made sure we negotiated with a partner we felt best fitted and that understands where we're going.

"But certainly I must say thank you to all the partners and we know them who wanted to speak to us and partnering with us but we needed to choose a partner we felt was the best fit," she added.

What gave Kappa the edge, Motaung elaborated, was the company's extensive distribution network already in place in the country, which will make their jerseys easily accessible to the multitude of their supporters.

Another factor that saw the Italian manufacturer win the Chiefs management over was their football heritage, as the two brands can understand each other's vision from a design, royalty and rights fee perspective.
