A former Kaizer Chiefs player remembers how he and his teammates at the time at the Soweto giants had a field day during one of the training sessions because of how Jabu Mahlangu appeared that day.
Following his unexpected move from Orlando Pirates to Chiefs in 2001, former striker Phumlani Mkhize has had some memories of his time in Naturena even though he didn't last long at the club due to his lack of regular game time.
In one of his memorable moments, Mkhize says Mahlangu gave them a funny sight when he tried to train in former Chiefs defender Cyril Nzama's shorts which were oversized for him, an idea which backfired as the dribbling star ended up being a laughing stock of his teammates on the day.
"During my time with Chiefs, I remember this one time when we were about to start training when Jabu Pule (now Mahlangu) realised that he didn't have shorts and a plan had to be made quickly. Cyril Nzama offered to borrow him his and we thought the problem was solved. However, it wasn't as there was a problem with the size of the shorts as you know that Jabu was and he still is skinny while Cyril was a big boy," said Mkhize.
"You could have seen how big those shorts were on Jabu and we all had a good laugh about how funny he looked on them until the late Jackson (Mokoena) who was the club's kit manager at the time came to his rescue by bringing him another pair of shorts. That helped as it also solved the confusion we had as Jabu used to wear number 11 and Cyril wore number four. We never stopped laughing at the guy because of how funny he looked in those big shorts. It reminds me of the 2001 Coca Cola cup final against Jomo Cosmos where Jabu was wearing shorts which were slightly oversized because that kit was a big make and he used a string around his waist to make sure that all was in order and he went on to perform," he concluded.
