Kaizer Chiefs prepare to take on TS Galaxy this week in a repeat of the 2019 Nedbank Cup final, and Soccer Laduma looks at how the squad has changed and where the players are who represented Amakhosi on that dark day in their history.
Coached by Ernst Middendorp at the time, Amakhosi were beaten 1-0 by Galaxy, who were still competing in the GladAfrica Championship, as they missed out on a great opportunity. Since then, the Amakhosi squad has changed quite a bit, with the club bringing in new faces in an attempt to end the drought, though it has not worked.
Of the players who started for Amakhosi at Moses Mabhida Stadium in 2019, six of them are still with the club. The six players are Bruce Bvuma, Daniel Cardoso, Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya, Lebogang Manyama, Khama Billiat and Bernard Parker. The five other players who have since left the club are Teenage Hadebe, Kgotso Moleko, Willard Katsande, Kabelo Mahlasela and Andriamirado 'Dax' Andrianarimanana.
Hadebe is playing his football for Major League Soccer club Houston Dynamo in the USA, after joining them from Turkish topflight club Yeni Malatyaspor. Katsande left Amakhosi at the end of last season, after a 10-year stay, to join rookies Sekhukhune United. Moleko and Mahlasela are in KZN, playing for AmaZulu and Royal AM respectively. Dax is playing his football in Reunion.
On the bench that day, Amakhosi had Brylon Petersen, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Leonard Castro, George Maluleka, Dumisani Zuma, Philani Zulu and Reeve Frosler.
Petersen is currently at Maritzburg United, Maluleka left Amakhosi to join Mamelodi Sundowns and Zulu is at AmaZulu. Mphahlele, Castro, Zuma and Frosler are still at Naturena.
