Bobby: The Fans Love Me

Bobby: The Fans Love Me

Bobby Motaung, the Kaizer Chiefs football manager, has argued that "genuine" Amakhosi supporters understand his role at the club.

The veteran administrator often takes the heat when the team is struggling and seldom gets the credit when results are positive. But he says it's all part of the game and he does not hold that again any of the fans.

"I think the fans love me. The mere fact that they criticise what I do or the job that I do encourages me," Motaung, speaking at the launch of the Shell Helix Cup, said.

"They love the club and they want the club to succeed and when they are happy it pleases me and it makes me a better person every day. If there's no performance at the end of the day, somebody must take the stick. Unfortunately, with my responsibility I take the stick."

Coach Ernst Middendorp paid tribute to Motaung for the work done behind the scenes prior to the start of the season, which includes the signing of Samir Nurkovic, Lazarous Kambole and Kearyn Baccus – three new players who have become regulars.

"Sometimes you bring players with a high pedigree and they come to the club but the jersey is big and they can't cope. But some make it, which is a good thing now with the players we have got. It's early days to still judge, but they are coming in very well," said Motaung.

"People who are genuinely Chiefs supporters understand my role – I don't score goals, I am not a goalkeeper, I am not a coach, I don't sit on the bench. I've got a different responsibility. For those that don't understand, it's unfortunate. I've got a job to do."
