Up-And-Coming Agent: ProAthlete Management

Up-And-Coming Agent: ProAthlete Management

ProAthlete Management may be newcomers in the game - but they are making huge strides already. The recently crowned Hollard Young Agency of the year winners spoke to the Siya crew on their journey in player management so far.

Why I am in player management

A lot of good players fall through the cracks and never reach their potential or never get the chance to be seen by the right eyes. My job is to help those players find those opportunities. Players also have the tendency when they become pros, not to save for retirement, or to study to plan for life after retirement, my role is to push and guide players to make better decisions in life. Also, to negotiate on their behalf to ensure they are not being exploited and that they get the best deal.

What I look for in a player

Good technical and tactical ability, good attitude, willingness to learn from their mistakes and take advice on how to improve, some sort of mental stability as well.

Jerome Karelse

A deal that Almost happened but didn't:

[Sighs] Simtandile Sishi from Stars of Africa to Stellenbosch FC.

Your most difficult transfer:

Allesandro Du Plessis: Highlands Park to Orlando Pirates because there were clearance issues. One of them being Highlands refusing to part ways with the player.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - MARCH 24:Lyle Foster

Your biggest regret in player management

Trusting players too much. Sadly, some players are just out to get things out of you.

Weirdest request you have ever received from a player/coach

It was a coach in the 3rd division in India, he wanted me to supply him with full international players for the 3rd division of India. I also had a player who told me that he needs money to cut his hair.

BURNLEY, ENGLAND - APRIL 10: Lyle Foster of Burnle

Player I wish I had managed:

Your message to aspiring players

You have to trust the process, always work hard to perfect your craft, as you never know when an opportunity may come. Put in extra work so you can be ahead of others, stay humble, get a mentor, preferably a pro player, who plays your position who can give you tips and advice. Rome wasn't built in one day, so have patience in your journey of becoming a pro player.
