It's not often you hear of someone who has a special place for two big clubs in their heart, but legendary actor Sello Maake Ka-Ncube has exclusively explained to Soccer Laduma why he supports both Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
Talk to us about the club you support in the PSL
I know this will sound strange. I grew up in Pretoria, so growing up the club I supported was Sundowns. But because I am a seed of a former Orlando Pirates player (Skhehla Ncube), I am torn. I always say I am a yellow bone. Sundowns is yellow and Pirates is the bones. I always say I am a yellow bone, but my blood is black and white. That basically explains that on the outer side I am Sundowns, but my blood is black and white because my father used to play for Orlando Pirates. He was in the same squad as Jomo Sono's father. When Sundowns and Pirates play, I go with the team that wins (laughs). At the end of the day, I am going to be happy. There is no way I am going to be unhappy when they play against each other.
What was it like having a father who played for Pirates?
It was very nice. People would often say 'this is Skhehla's son'. I can imagine what my kids feel like when they say 'this is Sello's child'. It makes them feel a bit special. My father was well known.
Did you get to watch him play for Pirates?
I never got to see him play. He played in the late 50s and in 1961, he got into a car accident and that's what got him out of football. I never got to see him. I only see pictures of him that were taken when he was playing.
So, how come you did not follow in his footsteps of playing football at that level?
I actually played when I was young, around 1976. I was playing for a club called Diepkloof Swallows. I was playing in the C division, and I got promoted to the B division to be a goalkeeper. Then, in 1977, basketball was introduced, and I branched into that. That was the last sport I played in my youth.
Do you have an all-time favourite player?
There are quite a few. There is Jomo Sono, 'Ace' Ntsoelengoe and Lucas 'Masterpieces' Moripe. Those are the players I love. I have seen others come and go, but nobody has matched these guys. There were other top players like Computer Lamola and Joel 'Ace' Mnini. Another one I enjoyed watching was Doctor Khumalo. Going to watch football was like going to a storytelling show because the players were going to tell a story with their feet. They don't make them like that anymore. I think players these days are restricted.
You are a part of the cast for a new series on Mzanzi Magic called Champions. Tell us a bit about it…
It's a series. I play the role of a football club owner in the series. It's about a player who turns out to be a club owner, like Kaizer Motaung and Jomo Sono.
