The story
Banyana Banyana's spirited run at the 2024 CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations came to an end with a 2-1 semifinal defeat to Nigeria on Tuesday evening.
Desiree Ellis' ladies relinquished their crown as continental champions after they went toe-to-toe with the record-holding Super Falcons but fell just short.
Goals from Nigerian captain Rasheedat Ajibade and Michelle Alozie sealed the win for the West Africans, while Linda Motlhalo kept Banyana in the fight with a well-taken penalty in the second half.
The ending of the match was marred by Gabriela Salgado seemingly suffering a serious injury shortly before the end of regular time, leaving players visibly shaken by the incident.
Both teams came together to comfort her as she was stretchered off the field, with Banyana players struggling to hold back tears and refocus for the rest of the encounter.
From the 2021 WAFCON winners, Robyn Moodaly (Salgado's fiancée), Janine van Wyk, Nomvula Kgoale, Thalea Smidt, to current Banyana stars such as Bambanani Mbane, Kaylin Swart and Ronnel Donnelly, all took to their IG stories to share heartfelt messages to their teammate.
