From Flashy Bonuses To Financial Woes: The Downfall Of Royal AM Unfolds

Shauwn Mkhize celebrates victory during the DStv Premiership match between Kaizer Chiefs and Royal AM at FNB Stadium on 18 September 2021 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

As Royal AM's troubles continue to mount, we revisit one of the club's most infamous moments: the on-field cash bonus saga.

The story

It hasn't been a good start to the new year for Shauwn Mkhize and her KwaZulu Natal-based club, Royal AM after player refused to return to training, demanding the payment of their outstanding December salaries, as reported by various local media outlets.

This follows after the postponement of their upcoming league clash against Chippa United and their crushing 3-1 defeat at home to TS Galaxy on 29 December, seeing them languishing in 15th on the Betway Prem table.

The club's issues have been well documented over the last couple of year, including a FIFA transfer ban due to R15 million owed to SuperSport United striker Samir Nurkovic.

To add to their woes, in November of last year, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and police raided several properties owned by club president MaMkhize, who allegedly faces a nearly R40 million tax debt linked to her family trust,

It's not clear whether or not this is the beginning of the end of Thwihli Thwahla as a club, if so, many supporters will remember them for their flashy owner and chairman, Andile Mpisane.

During their first season in the top flight, the club stunned the South African football fraternity by handing out cash bonuses to players on the pitch, during a live broadcast, after their 2-1 win over Maritzburg United (now Durban City) at Chatsworth Stadium in October 2021.

Royal AM and their officials have received a whopping R1.65m fine at the time, with R1.325 million of that fee being suspended after being proven guilty for bringing the league into disrepute by attempting to pay football players in cash in front of the media.
