The story
Kaizer Chiefs overcame arch-rivals Orlando Pirates 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, putting an end to a decade-long trophy drought.
Amakhosi skipper, Yusuf Maart, scored a superb winner to secure victory for the Amakhosi, who had taken an early lead via a Gaston Sirino penalty.
Coach Nasreddine Nabi reflected on bringing silverware back to the Glamour Boys after a long wait for its supporters, taking time to pen a lengthy tribute to his players, employers and the supporters.
"This trophy has a special taste. More than just a title, it's a personal and collective revenge against all the doubts we’ve faced along the way," noted Nabi, thanking his players by writing:
"First of all, thank you to my players for their total commitment, their hard work, and the sacrifices they made to bring this trophy home. Thank you as well to my staff for their relentless efforts throughout the season.
"We had to face the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finalist, the CAF Champions League semi-finalist, and a Champions League finalist to lift this trophy. Nothing was given — everything was earned," stated Nabi.
He reserved special praise for the club's supporters in trusting the process and for the Motaung family for backing him during difficult moments during the season.
"A heartfelt thank you to the Khosi Nation, who never stopped believing in the process, even when the criticism was heavy. You stood strong, loyal, and never lost faith during the toughest times. Your support was our strength. You deserve this victory.
"I want to thank and dedicate this trophy to Chairman Dr. Motaung, to Kaizer jnr and Bobby and the entire Motaung family, who stood by me through the hard times. This cup is yours," said the Tunisian-Belgian mentor, who added that Saturday’s victory is just a sign of things to come.
"But let's be clear: despite this victory, the job is not done. This is just the beginning. A long journey awaits us, with the African stage in sight."
