The story

On Wednesday, Orlando Pirates officially announced their new captain and vice-captains ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The captaincy had been vacant following the departure of defender Innocent Maela, with Nkosinathi Sibisi set to take over as the new team captain, with Thapelo Xoki and Mbekezeli Mbokazi appointed as his vice-captains.

The 29-year-old is no stranger to the leadership role, having previously worn the armband in Maela's absence.

He recently captained the Bafana Bafana national team during international friendlies in Polokwane against Mozambique and Tanzania.

Sibisi, who was recently honoured as the Betway Premiership Defender of the Season, was also seen sharing a heartfelt moment with former Pirates skipper Lucky Lekgwathi—the last captain to lead the club to a league title back in the 2011/12 season under Ruud Krol.

The legendary Bucs skipper was seen shaking hands and taking snaps with Sibisi at the MTN8 Launch event, seemingly congratulating the ex-Golden Arrows defender on being named as Pirates' new captain.
