Lucas Ribeiro Vs Mandla Masango: Who Had The Better Panenka?

Lucas Ribeiro of Mamelodi Sudowns during the Carling Knockout, Semi Final match between Marumo Gallants FC and Mamelodi Sundowns at Dr Molemela Stadium on 10 November 2024 in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

The story

Lucas Ribeiro Costa scored his seventh goal of the season on Sunday as Mamelodi Sundowns advanced to the final of the 2024 Carling Knockout Cup with a gritty 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Masandawana got their opener in the 53rd minute when the referee awarded a penalty for a handball in the box, following Peter Shalulile's attempt to keep the ball in play with a cross toward the centre of the goal.

Ribeiro kept his composure on the spot, calmly ignoring the goalkeeper's attempts to distract him, and then coolly converted with a cheeky Panenka-style finish.

The penalty executed by Ribeiro reminded us of Mandla Masango's effort back in 2014 during the Carling Black Label Cup match between Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

The silky Masango outsmarted the late Pirates shot-stopper Senzo Meyiwa by sending the ball floating down the middle of the net, leaving a bamboozled Meyiwa flailing to the right hand side of the goal.

The highly technical penalty style was popularised in the 1970's by Antonin Panenka, a Czechoslovakian midfielder who debuted the penalty style on the global stage at the 1976 Euro's, where he scored the winning penalty to see his nation upset West Germany, 5-3 after a 2-2 draw in regular time.
