Some of the most interesting sights on a football pitch are the series of creative tattoos that several players have inked on their skin. These are five of the top ten most interesting tattoos in football:
10. Craig Bellamy
On the eve of a World Cup qualifier in Germany, Wales's captain unveiled a new piece of body art, paying tribute to medieval Welsh nationalist, Owain Glyndwr. Bellamy's tattoo portrays the 1402 Battle of Pilleth, won by Glyndwr, which snakes around his arm and incorporates the name of his son, Cameron.
9. Daniel Agger
Not content with sporting several tattoos himself, including the sobering words 'Memento Mori', the Liverpool defender has also qualified as a tattoo artist in order to etch others. When Liverpool were close to winning the League, Agger promised to ink up the whole team with a special design. Perhaps some of his team-mates were therefore breathing a quiet sigh of relief when they missed victory - and a tat - by just four points
8. Fernando Torres
Fernando Torres has three prominent tattoos: the Roman numerals inked on his leg are said to mark his first date with his childhood sweetheart; the number nine on his arm is his shirt number; and the curious codes on his left arm are his name written in "Tengwar", a fictional language used in 'The Lord of the Rings'.
7. Diego Maradona
Diego Maradona has an interesting tattoo of Fidel Castro on his arm, after he confessed that the Cuban, and his counterpart, Che Guevara are personal heroes of his. Along with God, he is the reason I am alive," said Maradona of Castro.
6. Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney's latest addition to his tattoo collection? The word 'then' etched just below the small of his back. His friend has had 'OK' inked in the same position so that when they stand together and drop their trousers, they can flash "OK then" at friends. Childish? Never. Rooney's other etchings include his wife's name, Colleen, above a crucifix and the title of a Stereophonics album, 'Just Enough Education to Perform'.
