Desiree Ellis: A Journey From Player To Pioneer

The story

Banyana Banyana's decorated head coach, Desiree Ellis sat down with Laureus South Africa to reflect on her incredible career in football as both a coach and player.

Ellis, who was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology last month, is rightfully regarded as a trailblazer in Women's football.

From captaining Banyana and leading South Africa to their first-ever qualification for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup and secured their inaugural WAFCON title as head coach in 2022 — she'll behind a remarkable legacy in the beautiful game whenever she decides to step away.

"Beyond the pitch, Desiree champions education and inspires those around her to strive for excellence daily. It's clear why she is our May #LaureusGameChanger," wrote Laureus SA on Instagram, with Ellis detailing how far she's come in her career.

"I started playing as a six-year-old, playing with boys at school. I joined the girls team at the age of 15, and I started playing for the national team at the age of 30. I retired from the national team, well football in my late 30's. I got dropped from the national team after we got a new coach. I then started coaching at Spurs Ladies..."
