In his latest podcast interview with football agent, Mike Makaab, veteran PSL midfielder Michael Morton explained why he feels South Africa's elite footballers should be playing outside of the country.
In the last 23-man Bafana squad selected by Hugo Broos to face Congo Brazzaville in the Africa Cup of Nations saw just three overseas-based players being included.
With Ronwen Williams' recently nominated in the Yashin Trophy category for Best Goalkeeper of the Year at the Ballon d'Or Awards, as well as the consistent performances of Teboho Mokoena, Aubrey Modiba and Khuliso Mudau, have seen many fans question why these talents aren't plying their trade in Europe's top leagues.
Morton believes that if Mzansi's elite footballers made the move to Europe while at the top of their game, it would open up the space for other talents to emerge from the shadows.
"If our best players don't go, the next player can't make the move because, say you have Ronwen Williams as the best goalkeeper at Sundowns, if he never makes the jump to Europe, then the second choice at Sundowns never gets exposed to play professional football," said the former Orlando Pirates midfielder.
"If we don't get our guys moving outside of South Africa, then it just limits the amount of professional footballers we get to create in South Africa. That's where Brazil is so strong, they just have this conveyer belt. The players just go through the Brazilian system and then off they go to Europe and Asia etc. Giving them a database of tens and thousands of footballers," he added.
