The story
Former Maritzburg United star Bongokuhle Hlongwane is a true fan favourite at his Major League Soccer (MLS) club, Minnesota United, a team he joined back in 2022.
Bongokuhle Hlongwane's Loons jersey is among the top 25 highest selling in the MLS according to the league's website. No specific numbers were shared in terms of exactly how many jerseys sold, but Hlongwane makes the top 25, in position 22.
Hlongwane, who wears number 21 for his side, is one of two Minnesota United players on the list and sits one place ahead of teammate, former Norwich striker Teemu Pukki.
It's no surprise that Inter Miami's Lionel Messi topped the list in his first season in the US, with four other former FC Barcelona stars making the list: Luis Suárez (2nd), Riqui Puig (5th), Jordi Alba (18th), and Sergio Busquets (24th).
The 23-year-old, Hlongwane is one of six players aged 23 or younger on the top 25 list alongside Inter Miami's Benjamin Cremaschi (19); Seattle Sounders' Pedro de la Vega (23); Chicago Fire's Brian Gutiérrez (20); Columbus Crew's Aidan Morris (22) and New York Red Bulls' John Tolkin (21).
