While Mamelodi Sundowns ran riot in thier CAF Champions League outing, Bidvest Wits began their CAF Confederation Cup journey with a 1-0 defeat to Young Buffaloes on Satuday afternoon.
The Clever Boys only entered the tournament in the second phase after they were given a bye in the preliminary round. However, the club's chances are now at risk following the first-leg defeat at the Mavuso Sports Centre. Former Wits CEO Jose Ferreira revealed before the season that the Confederation Cup was not a priority for the club this season. Wits reached the third round of the tournament in 2017 and 2018 but were denied entry to the group stages on both occasions after losing to Smouha SC of Egypt and Nigeria's Enyimba respectively. Gavin Hunt will now turn his attention attention to the club's next Absa Premiership encounter against Orlando Pirates next weekend.
