CAF Super Cup Report: Espérance v Zamalek 14 February 2020

Egyptian giants Zamalek were crowned CAF Super Cup champions after defeating Esperance of Tunisia 3-1 on Friday evening.

Esperance qualified for the Super Cup after winning the CAF Champions League while Zamalek won last season's CAF Confederation Cup title.

South Africa had two officials representing the country, as Victor Gomes was in charge of the match assisted by his compatriot Zakhele Siwela and Souru Phatsoane of Lesotho.

The White Knights got off to a dream start as Youssef Obama gave opened the scoring in just second minute of the match with a great header from Mohamed Shafy's cross.

Zamalek came close to doubling their lead in the 16th minute after Moustafa Mohamed unleashed a half-volley that missed inches over the bar.

Esperance got in to the game after the half-hour mark athey almost levelled matters in the 33rd minute after Abdelraouf Benguit let fly with a threatening strike from range that was foced White Knights goalkeeper Mohamed Abougabal into a fine sva,e

The Tunisian giants were given a lifeline five minutes after the break with a penalty awarded in their favour for a handball inside the box following a Video Assitant Referee review. After a five-minutedelay, Abdelraouf Benguit eventually levelled matters for Moine Chaabani's troops with a strike from the penalty spot.

However, the Egyptian side restored their lead just before the hour-mark with Achraf Bencharki finding the bottom corner with a shot from the centre of the box.

Zamalek came close to adding a third goal with 20 minutes remaining after Obama found the target with a strike from outside the box but Esperance goalkeeper Moez Cherifia kept his side in the game with a good save.

The Tunisian giants were piling the pressure in the tail end in search of the equaliser but they were caught out deep in stoppage time on a counter-attack as Bencharki sealed the tie with the third goal for Zamalek.
