CAF Champions League Report: Mamelodi Sundowns v Chicken Inn 27 February 2016

CAF Champions League

Result:  Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 Chicken Inn

Date:  27 February 2016

Venue:  Lucas Moripe Stadium

Katlego Mashego netted a stoppage-time penalty to hand Mamelodi Sundowns a hard-earned 2-0 win over Chicken Inn in their second leg CAF Champions League clash.

The hosts made their intentions clear from the onset as they pushed forward in search of an early goal, looking dangerous with every move but the Chicken Inn defence was doing well to keep them out.

Khama Billiat came close to grabbing the opener as he took matters into his own hands with a 17th minute stunner that forced the visiting goalkeeper into a parried save.

Masandawana were looking good to break the deadlock, but their opponents were making it hard work as they too pushed forward.

Although, Sundowns were finally rewarded with a 34th minute effort which was met by the head of Wayne Arendse at the back post to make it 1-0.

Pitso Mosimane's charges continued to play with confidence, but they suffered a massive scare right on the stroke of half-time as the visitors did well to get through on goal, beating Denis Onyango before Katswairo knocked the upright in the 43rd minute..

Mamelodi Sundowns came out firing in the second stanza, with Anthony Laffor striking the side-netting after a lovely build-up in the 50th minute.

The hosts were dominating play in the middle of the park but their finishing was letting them down, and Castro was the next culprit with a squandered chance in the 56th minute.

Laffor also missed a gorgeous opportunity a few minutes later, but perhaps the Zimbabwean outfit was to be commended for the pressure they were applying at the back as they tried to keep the aggregate scores level.

"The Brazilians" continued to push forward and just when everybody thought the game may just be heading all the way to a penalty shoot-out, Billiat was brought down in the area and Katlego Mashego made no mistake from the penalty spot to hand the hosts a 2-0 lead in stoppage time, which saw them claim a 2-1 aggregate win.

Here is how they lined up:

Mamelodi Sundowns:  Onyango, Mashaba, Mbekile, Langerman, Nthethe, Arendse, Kekana, Soumahoro, Dolly, Billiat, Castro.

Chicken Inn:  Chipezeze, Phiri, Bernard, Lunga, Jackson, Mhlanga, Kutinyu, Madhazi, Chirambandare, Tarumbwa and Katswairo.
