SAFA Explains Why Banyana Banyana Are Training At Mamelodi Sundowns

SAFA has set the record straight regarding reports which suggested that the association has neglected to arrange proper training facilities for Banyana Banyana.

The South African Football Association's (SAFA) head of communication, Dominic Chimhavi, has responded to reports regarding Mamelodi Sundowns accommodating the Banyana squad ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro.

Chimhavi has made special mention of the fact that SAFA is still in liaison with Nike despite not being able to use their facilities.

"I just want to set the record straight, the issue of us not having prepared for the Nike Center is not true, Nike is one of our sponsors, there is no way that we can be knocked out of Nike.

"Nike is an artificial pitch, we are not going to play on an artificial pitch (in Brazil)," Chimhavi told the Siya crew.

The Nike Football Training Center in Soweto has two full sized soccer pitches with synthetic grass.

However, Chimhavi told Soccer Laduma that in order to prepare for the pitches in Brazil, it wouldn't be ideal to train on the synthetic grass at the Nike Center, adding that they have also retreated from Bedfordview due to issues with the grass.

"We have been training at Bedfordview, pitches that are a bit thick, and so in a bid to prepare for the pitches in Brazil, which are a bit thinner, we have discovered that the pitches which are similar to the ones that we will play on in Brazil are the pitches at (Mamelodi) Sundowns.

"We are sponsored by Patrice Motsepe, we have a relationship with him, why wouldn't we use a pitch which is almost similar to the one that we are going to use in Brazil," SAFA's head of communications concluded.
