Banyana Banyana v Brazil

Olympics

Result: Brazil 0-0 Banyana Banyana

Date: 10 August 2016

Venue: Amazonia Arena

Banyana Banyana ended their Olympic Games campaign with a point, after playing out a 0-0 draw with Brazil in their Group game.

South Africa nearly broke the deadlock after seven minutes when Jermaine Seoposenwe played Thembi Kgatlana through on goal, but the winger was denied by Aline.

Brazil continued to dominate possession and almost went ahead in the 24th minute, but Roxanne Barker produced a fine save to keep out Tamires's effort distance.

Vera Pauw's charges struggled to mount any serious attack against the Brazil defence, although Kgatlana was trying her best to carve out openings.

The woodwork came to Banyana's rescue in the 39th minute, as Debinha rattled the frame of the goal from the edge of the area with Barker well beaten.

Despite Brazil's constant pressure, the score remained goalless as the sides entered the halftime break.

The second half continued in the same fashion as the first, although Brazil also introduce Marta as they continued to search for the opening goal.

Pauw made her first change after the hour-mark, as she introduced Sannah Mollo for Linda Motlhalo.

Banyana had their first real opening of the second half in the 70th minute when Kgatlana forced Aline into a finger-tip save with an effort from 20-yards out.

Barker had to be at her best in the 82nd minute, as the Banyana shot-stopper pulled off a superb reflex save to deny Fabiana from point-blank range.

The hosts pushed for an opener in the closing stages, but were unable to bypass an inspired Barker, as the both sides earned a share of the spoils on the night.

Banyana finish the campaign at the foot of the Group with one point, although they did not find the back of the net in any of the three matches.

Here's how they lined up:

Brazil: Aline, Monica, Thaisa, Tamires, Debinha, Andressa Alves, Poliana, Erika, Bruna (C), Raquel Fernandes, Andressa

South Africa: Barker, Vilakazi, Matlou, Van Wyk (C), Makhabane, Malherbe, Motlhalo, Seoposenwe, Jane, Smeda, Kgatlana
