COSAFA Women's Championship Semi-Final: South Africa v Malawi

COSAFA Women's Championship Semi-Final: South Africa v Malawi

Banyana Banyana shrugged off a goalless first half to thump Malawi 6-2 for a spot in the COSAFA Women's Championship final.

Banyana's intentions were clear minutes into the contest with a free-kick from Hildah Magaia finding Mapula Kgoale, who headed against the side-netting from the far side.

Malawi were dealt a blow five minutes to the half-hour mark when goalkeeper Samir Amidu got a red card for a foul on Magaia, leaving Mercy Sikelo to enter in goal.

Temwa Chawinga still had a chance to put Malawi four minutes to halftime from a pin-point header in the area, but Dlamini scrambled down to parry.

Banyana got the opening goal five minutes after the break as Kgoale reacted smartly to a loose ball near the goal-line to smash the roof of the net following a free-kick.

The lead lasted a minute though after a curling free-kick from the right by Chawinga arrowed into the far corner well beyond Dlamini.

Banyana were back ahead four minutes later when Magaia got between two challenges in the area for a calm finish, with Koketso Tlailane removed for Karabo Makhurubetshi minutes later.

Kgoale gave the hosts a comfortable two-goal cushion on 64 minutes after getting on the end of Moodaly's cross from the left to rifle in off the post, before Magaia bagged her second and Banyana's fourth just before the water break.

Sibulelele Holweni got the home side's fifth goal in the last 15 minutes after bringing down a ball on the left to fire underneath the gloves of Sikelo.

Banyana didn't let up minutes later when Magaia beat Sikelo to a ball over the top of the defence to slot into an empty net.

Tabitha Chawinga gave the visitors a second goal inside the last 10 minutes after beating off a challenge in the area before firing past Dlamini, but it was nothing more than a consolation as Banyana will now turn attention to Saturday's final.
