Banyana Banyana missed out on the Bronze medal at the COSAFA Cup after losing to Zambia on penalties at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Desiree Ellis' charges suffered defeat to Malawi in their semi-final tie on Thursday, while Zambia fell to Tanzania on penalties.
South Africa were forced to make an early change as Robyn Moodaly replaced Mamello Makhabane in the middle of the park on 17 minutes.
Zambia took the lead two minutes later, with Ochumba Oseke Lubandji finding the back of the net after firing past Kaylin Swart.

After failing to find an equaliser in the first, Ellis responded with a double change at the start of the second as Gabriela Salgado and Melinda Kgadiete were introduced.
Banyana had to wait until the 75th minute to get back on level terms as Sibulele Holweni found the back of the net with her fifth goal of the tournament.
Holweni's strike ultimately sent the game to penalties, where the Zambians held their never to triumph 4-3 and claim the bronze medal.
