Banyana Banyana Are Third In Africa To End 2019

Banyana Banyana have discovered where they're ranked among the best in the world after FIFA revealed the final rankings for the year today.

For Banyana, 2019 will go down as a landmark year after they played in their first ever FIFA Women's World Cup a few months ago, with Thembi Kgatlana getting a historic goal for them in the opening game against Spain.

Meanwhile, the team is up for the Women's National Team of the Year award at the 2019 CAF Awards, while Desiree Ellis and Kgatlana are also up for individual gongs for their efforts over the course of the last 12 months.

Ellis' side find themselves ranked in 55th-place as the year comes to an end, in-between Panama and Northern Ireland, and are in third place in the continent behind Nigeria and Cameroon.

After winning the Women's COSAFA Cup back in August, Banyana finished the year with the disappointment of missing out on a spot at the 2020 Olympics before a hard-fought battle against Japan saw them lose 2-0 in their last game of the decade in November.

The next FIFA Rankings will be published on March 27 as the first for the new year.
