Banyana Banyana showed Equatorial Guinea no mercy at the Africa Women's Cup of Nations after romping to a 7-1 victory in their second Group B encounter at the Cape Coast Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Desire Ellis' charges were looking to build on their opening round victory over Nigeria this past weekend and edge closer to the semi-finals.
Banyana had chances to take the lead early in the game but they could not grab their opportunities despite the Equatorial Guinea defence being scattered all over the place.
Ellis' charges finally took the lead in the 22nd minute through Linda Motlhalo, who converted from the penalty spot following a handball inside the box, 0-1. Nompumelelo Nyandeni quickly gave Banyana a two-goal cushion two minutes later with a simple finish after Thembi Kgatlana did all the work to set her up from the right side of the box. However, Elena Nkuandum pulled a goal back for Equatorial Guinea on the stroke of half-time with a close range strike at the far post after an error by Banyana in the last five minutes of the half. Banyana regained their dominance in the second half and Kgatlana had an opportunity to restore the two-goal lead two minutes after the restart with a looping strike from just outside the box that sailed slightly over the bar. Nevertheless, Refiloe Jane made it 3-1 for Banyana four minutes before the hour with a finish into a gaping net after Kgatlana again unselfishly laid a square pass to the forward after going through on the right side of the box. Kgatlana got on the scoresheet herself on the hour-mark, making it 4-1 for Ellis' side after rounding the Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper to slot into an empty. Kgatlana completed her brace in the 62nd minute in almost a similar fashion as her first goal, going through in the heart of defence and scoring into an empty net to make it 5-1. South Africa were still on the front foot 20 minutes before time and showed no signs of slowing down. Amanda Mthandi netted the sixth 14 minutes before time as the floodgates were opening up while Jarmaine Seoposenwe quickly added the seventh goal for Banyana 11 minutes before time. Banyana had opportunities to score more late in the game but the seven goals were enough in the end as they moved top of the group.
