Stadium Controversy: Nigeria's Advantage Over Bafana

Stadium Controversy: Nigeria's Advantage Over Bafana

Bafana Bafana will be the last team in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers to play Rwanda on their artificial pitch at Stade Huye that head coach Hugo Broos described as not suitable for professional football.

Bafana could not capitalise on rivals Nigeria and Zimbabwe dropping points in two successive matches, after they lost 2-0 to Rwanda on Tuesday and were leapfrogged at the top of Group C by the East African nation.

It was anticipated that the condition of the pitch at Stade Huye would be bad after Rwanda hosted Zimbabwe in the same venue in their opening qualifying match.

However, the artificial surface became worse on Tuesday in rainy conditions, as the pitch became waterlogged for the most part of the first stanza and it even suited the home side after they scored two early goals.

Broos says CAF and FIFA should intervene in such cases and not allow such a pitch to host such an important game.

"It's unbelievable that a qualifier for the World Cup is played on such a pitch, it's impossible but okay, it is what it is," Broos told reporters.

"I think CAF and FIFA have to be strict in the rules, where you are gonna play. You're talking about professional football, you're talking about qualifiers for the biggest tournament of professional football, the World Cup and you have to play on such a pitch?" he fumed.

Bafana's rivals in the group, the Super Eagles and Lesotho will have a level playing field when they visit Rwanda, who will not play home qualifying matches until 2025. Amavubi will play back-to-back away matches against Benin and Lesotho when the World Cup qualifiers resume in June next year.

Rwanda are currently renovating their 45 000 seater Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, which will be ready to host matches when the Super Eagles and Likuena travel to Amavubi.

There are currently fine margins between teams in Group C with Nigeria and Lesotho having to play in much better conditions in Rwanda would make Bafana feel hard done by, with all the teams from top to bottom separated by a point.
