How Pitso Could Break Bafana Hearts

How Pitso Could Break Bafana Hearts

Pitso Mosimane's flirting with the idea of coaching the Nigerian national team could spell heartbreak for Bafana Bafana, who have been drawn alongside the Super Eagles in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

In May this year, the Siya crew reported that Mosimane was shortlisted for the Nigeria national team job. At the time, he was on the brink of winning the Saudi Arabian first division with Al Ahli.

Five months later and talk of a possible switch for Mosimane continue to linger as Nigeria find themselves struggling in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers having dropped points against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, while Mosimane recently became a free agent after his contract with UAE club Al Wahda was terminated by mutual consent.

Mosimane's latest comments in an interview with the South African Football Journalists Association (SAFJA) added fuel to the fire as he flirted with the idea of taking over the Super Eagles job.

"Yeah and probably, there might be interest back at home and also maybe national teams, it will be nice also but it depends on which one and it depends on the reason also. It's Cup of Nations [Africa Cup of Nations] in January, so maybe short-term but even after January the World Cup Qualifiers keep going on. Maybe that can also interest me but it has to be the right thing. With the national teams, I don't have a problem to be back in the continent but club wise in the continent it's not gonna be that easy," Mosimane said.

Bafana Bafana, who have enjoyed a mixed start to their World Cup qualifiers with a win and a loss against Benin and Rwanda respectively, will face the Super Eagles in June and if Mosimane does take up the Nigeria job, will face Hugo Broos' men in what is expected to be a crunch encounter.

Mosimane has on two occasions broken South African hearts whilst on the bench of Al Ahly where he defeated Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2021 and 2022 CAF Champions League campaigns respectively.

He does have a number of options at his disposal but a potential showdown with Bafana Bafana could be in the works if Mosimane decides to return to national team football.
