McKenzie: We Don’t Have Time For Egos & Pettiness

SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan and Gayton McKenzie Minister of Sports Arts and Culture during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers match between South Africa and Uganda at Orlando Stadium, in Soweto on 06 September 2024

South Africa's Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has weighed in on the alleged disagreements between SAFA and the PSL.

For the longest of time, there have been alleged disagreements between the powers-that-be at SAFA and the PSL in what appeared to be a power struggle on issues to do with governing of football in Mzansi.

While it has hardly been admitted by any of the highest offices of the country's football leadership, there have been alleged conflicting views from them in some instances on matters pertaining to the beautiful game.

In 2020 during the discussions between Safa and the PSL about the resumption of football after the League was halted because of the Covid-19 outbreak, at times the two local football governing bodies appeared to have conflicting views on when the season should restart.

However, SAFA president Danny Jordaan went on record in the media at the time to say there were no issues between him and his PSL counterpart, in chairman Irvin Khoza.

"Remember the two of us brought the World Cup to South Africa, the only country on the African continent to host the World Cup. Remember also, we delivered the World Cup that was voted the best ever," Jordaan said at the time, in part, speaking to SAFM.

Speaking exclusively to the Siya crew, McKenzie said there will have to be no issues between the two powerful organisations going forward, if there were any which existed.

"No, they don't have a choice, they will have to get together. We don't have time for egos and pettiness. This is a national sport. Both SAFA and the PSL are doing a good job. So, I'm not aware yet of tensions because I don't go after rumours, but once I see that these rumours are true, I will deal with that matter," said McKenzie.
