A lot has been said after the controversial comments about Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana following the latest squad that has been announced by head coach Hugo Broos.
On Wednesday, Broos announced the final 23-man Bafana squad to play back-to-back friendly matches against Namibia and Democratic Republic of the Congo in preparation for next year's African Cup of Nations tournament in Cote d'Ivoire, as well as the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Broos selected no single player from Chiefs, and when asked about it, the Belgian mentor boldly said no one from the Soweto giants deserved a call up to the senior national team.
"Kaizer Chiefs is still Kaizer Chiefs as in last year. They have a lot of new players and maybe that's the reason they don't achieve at the level that they need to achieve. They are still many points behind Sundowns. I said that already last year, for any competition it's important that the top teams are at the top of the rankings," said Broos, in part, speaking to the media.
"So, yes, Chiefs has to improve. When I see the games… I was at the Chiefs game on Saturday and I'm sorry, but for the moment there's no (Chiefs) player who deserves to be a Bafana Bafana player," the veteran coach said.
Former Chiefs defender Derrick Spencer agrees with Broos and is calling for support on him in preparing for the AFCON.
The Good
"I think what we need to focus on is on Chiefs getting the team ready for the season. We need to focus on them putting a strong team and the national team coach knows what he is doing. Let's leave him to do his job," said Spencer.
The Bad
"I wouldn't say he was being harsh because Chiefs haven't been performing well for the past few seasons. There hasn't really been a player who has been putting his hand up to say that he deserves to be in the national team. Last season was a bad season for Chiefs," he said.
The Ugly
"That's why I believe that the national team coach should be left to do his job because at the end of the day if the team isn't performing under him it will be him who is at fault. It's his job. I think we just need to support the national team coach going to the AFCON and forget about the players who came from which team. We just have to try and unite for the sake of Bafana Bafana," concluded Spencer.
Has Broos got it all wrong about the fast-improving Chiefs?
