Augusto Palacios Issues A Warning In Support Of New Bafana Bafana Coach

Legendary coach Augusto Palacios has issued a warning in support of the newly appointed head coach of the South African senior national team.

This week, the South African Football Association announced the appointment of Belgian coach Hugo Broos as the new Bafana Bafana coach.

While many in the fraternity had hoped for a local coach to be appointed as Molefi Ntseki's replacement, after the names of Pitso Mosimane and Benni McCarthy, among others were bandied about, the 69-year-old Belgian got the nod to lead Bafana going forward.

Palacios, who is a former Bafana coach himself, has appealed for support to the ex-KV Oostende mentor.

"The appointment of a national team coach is done in the same way as that of a club. The officials decide on who to appoint and there is nothing we can say after that as the appointment has already been done. But what I can say is that I would have thought of a local coach at this stage and at the moment we do have three coaches who have been doing well at Sundowns and there are coaches who are doing well at AmaZulu and Golden Arrows for example.

"But, like I say, a coach has already been appointed and there is nothing we can say. We wish him the best of luck as he needs our support on anything that he will be doing. He had great success with Cameroon, and he injected a lot of young players into the Cameroon national team. We can't be talking negative now about the guy who has just been appointed. I wish that every coach in the PSL will support him," said Palacios, speaking to the Siya crew.

"At age 69 (same age as Palacios), he's got enough experience. Let's please not start by criticizing him or try to sabotage him, let's support him. He will make mistakes, but he is coming with a new policy," the experienced coach added.
