Why Real Madrid Missed Out On New Manchester United Star Donny van de Beek

While Manchester United's Donny van de Beek has already impressed since his arrival at the Red Devils, here is how close he was to joining Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid.

On 2 September, the Red Devils announced that they had acquired Van de Beek's signature at a fee of €40 million (R798 million) after he contributed to 75 goals in 175 senior appearances for Ajax Amsterdam.

The transfer came as a bit of a surprise to United supporters, who might not have anticipated their club targeting another forward-thinking midfielder following Bruno Fernandes' arrival in January earlier this year.

In addition, the player appeared to be close to signing for Los Blancos just a few months ago, and was also rumoured to be set to link up with his former Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman at FC Barcelona in the week before his arrival at Old Trafford.

For a more in-depth feature on United's only signing so far in this window, have a look in Soccer Laduma's 23 September edition, issue 1192!

His agent Sjaak Swart revealed that "in March, everything was ready for him to go to Real Madrid, but with the pandemic everything was postponed. The clubs have no income. The whole scene changed", comments that suggest United were lucky to have had the chance to land the Dutchman.

Many thought manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was looking to add more depth to his side, while others speculated as to whether or not Van de Beek's arrival could be the club preparing to lose Paul Pogba further down the line.

Van De Beek, though, has not joined United only to be a rotational player, at least not in the long term, and he has already made a case for himself cracking Solskjaer's strongest starting XI.
