Top 50 World Cup Moments - Milla's Corner Flag Dance

Top 50 World Cup Moments - Milla's Corner Flag Dance

With less than 50 days until the start of the World Cup in Brazil, Soccer Laduma takes a look at our Top 50 World Cup moment – today number 23: Milla's Corner Flag Dance.

This moment would actually have appeared amongst our Top 10 World Cup moments, but in honor of Roger Milla's 62nd birthday we decided to share it with you today.

The performances of Milla, who had come out of semi-retirement to participate in the tournament, and Cameroon at the 1990 World Cup in Italy made supporters from all over the world take notice of Africa.

In the first game Cameroon upset World Cup champions Argentina around football legend Diego Maradona, by beating them 1-0.

Roger Milla, however, wrote his name into FIFA's history books in the second game against Romania.

Coming off the bench after 58 minutes, he became the oldest goal-scorer in the tournament's history when braking clear of the Romanian defence to fire the Indomitable Lions in front with 13 minutes remaining.

He then famously ran to the corner flag and performed his hip-wiggling Makossa dance, which he would perform four times throughout a glorious tournament performance.

Ten minutes later he struck again and Cameroon had won their second game.

The victory assured the Africans a place in the second round where Milla proved the hero again, his two goals in extra-time against Colombia sent his country into the quarter-final.

This was the furthest an African nation had reached and in the quarter-final they were only eight minutes away from reaching the semi-final.

Milla shone again after coming off the bench with his country trailing 1-0. First he won a penalty and then he set up the second goal. Unfortunately England equalized in the 82nd minute and won the game 3-2 after extra-time.

But the outstanding performances of Milla, who was later crowned African Football of the Year, and Cameroon as well as Egypt led to the announcement that there would be a third African team at future FIFA World Cups.

We take our head of to this great African legend.
