It has been 14 years since Mamelodi Sundowns last won the tournament in any of its guises, but Tiyani Mabunda has revealed why he thinks the club can end their MTN8 duck this campaign.
Over the last few years Sundowns have managed to get their hand on just about every trophy on offer, but the MTN8 has been eluding them.
The last time the Brazilians won the competition was when it was still known as the SAA Super 8 back in 2007; however Mabunda, who has been named the club's ambassador since calling time on his career at the end of the 2020/21 season believes that the club can end their drought when they take on Cape Town City on 30 October at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium.
"We know this cup has eluded us for a very long time, if you calculate the years, its been 14 years since we last won it. I think the last time we won this competition was when it was SAA Super 8," Mabunda told journalists at the MTN8 final announcement.
It's a really important cup for us and we want to complete the cabinet seeing all the accolades that the club has, the only one that is eluding us is this one. We really looking forward to see this cup come home and complete the cabinet and it would make me really proud even though I was one of the players that haven't won it but I've got maximum faith in the current squad because they are doing so well," he added.
Standing in their way however is a cleve Cape Town City outfit who have proven to be a tricky customer for the Brazilians in recent times.
