Modise was the first player to win the footballer of the season award when it was introduced in 2008/09, while he was in the colours of Orlando Pirates. At the time, the PSL had the footballer of the season and player of the season as two different awards. Modise won it again the following season and no one has ever won it in consecutive campaigns since then.
Zwane, though, has an opportunity to emulate Modise. The 31-year-old Sundowns player, who is also nominated for the players' player and midfielder of the season award, has scored 11 goals in all domestic competitions for the Brazilians, also contributing with two assists.
Former Sundowns striker Katlego Mphela, who played with both Zwane and Modise, feels the reigning footballer of the season could miss out on the award, with Shalulile more of a favourite, in his opinion.
