Having achieved almost everything locally, reigning PSL Goalkeeper of the Season Ronwen Williams has revealed why he still believes that a move to Europe is well within his grasp.
Williams has proven to be amongst the best goal minders in South Africa since breaking into the Matsatsantsa first team more than 10 years ago. His prowess for the Tshwane outfit has been clear for all to see.
Despite being in demand on a local front, there is still a burning desire within the 29-year-old to test his abilities in Europe – something he hopes to achieve in the near future.
"I've got dreams of playing overseas. After the Afcon in 2019 I had big dreams of going overseas. But that obviously didn't materialize. And then the pandemic hit us as well. So it's been a bit of a challenge in that regard, but my management, obviously, they are working behind the scenes, pushing that, so the door (is) not closed yet," Williams told the Siya crew in an exclusive interview.
"I mean, on a daily basis, it never slips my mind what I want to achieve because I've got a son, who reminds me each and every day, that when are we moving overseas? So it keeps me on my toes to work hard and that's what I've been doing."
Williams, who defied all odds to forge a professional career for himself, boasts an impressive trophy cabinet, which includes six major titles won in his stay with Matsatsantsa. This includes three Nedbank Cups, two MTN8 trophies and a Telkom Knock-Out title – but there is still one trophy 'Ronza' yearns for if his European move does not materialize.
"On the local front, obviously I want to win the league. I want to win the league title with SuperSport and there'll be no better feeling being the captain as well. I've been at this club for the past 16 years. So, I think it would be an amazing achievement for me if I do win the league title - and lifting it as well.
"So that's my dreams locally. I just need to believe that all of that is possible. Like the slogan says, "impossible is nothing," So I believe that in the next few years my best football is still to come and hopefully, that can be abroad. If not, I've got dreams locally as well, that I need to achieve. I've achieved a lot, but there's way more things to achieve. And, I mean, the league title for me is a start, , that's where my mind is. That's where my focus is obviously, it won't happen this season. So we'll push hard to get that right next season."
