The Pharaohs announced on Monday that the Reds forward will be their national team captain going forward, breaking with one of their long-held traditions.
The decision comes on the back of some controversy after previous captain Ahmed Fathy said he would refuse to hand Salah the armband in 2019. Fathy has since not been called up to the national team, and a new captain had to be named.
Salah, who, as a kid, had to take up to 10 buses and travel four-and-a-half hours each way to leave his home village Nagrig to train in Cairo, has now been appointed as the Pharaohs' skipper after Egypt broke with their tradition of handing the captaincy to the most senior players in the squad.
A statement from the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed that coach Hossam Al-Badri had consulted Amr El-Sulya and Mohamed Elneny, who made their national team debuts before Salah, before making the decision.
"Hossam Al-Badri, the coach of the first national football team, has decided to award the captain's armband to Mohamed Salah," the EFA said in an official statement on Monday.
"The decision came after the coach informed the players who preceded Salah in seniority and who supported this step. Al-Badri believes that the next stage needs stability and stability in some matters, including the leadership badge.
"The technical and administrative staff seeks to arrange matters in the coming period to achieve the dream of the Egyptians and football fans to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar."
Salah is likely to take the armband for the first time in Egypt's 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June, with Gabon, Libya and Angola the other teams drawn in their group.
